In mixed martial arts (MMA), the use of tape is a critical element of an athlete's preparation, serving multiple purposes beyond just holding things together. MMA tapes, often a combination of athletic tape and gauze, are used to provide essential support and protection for the hands, fingers, and wrists during both training and competition.

The Purpose of MMA Tapes

The primary function of tape in MMA is to reinforce the delicate structure of the hand, which is subjected to immense stress during striking. This is done to prevent common injuries such as sprains, fractures, and jammed knuckles.

  • Hand and Wrist Reinforcement: Taping techniques are used to compress the small bones of the hand and create a rigid, stable fist. This is especially crucial for the wrist, where tape acts as a strong brace, preventing the joint from bending or twisting awkwardly upon impact.

  • Knuckle Protection: Tape and gauze are often layered over the knuckles to create a padded surface. This provides an extra cushion that absorbs shock and helps protect the skin from cuts and abrasions inside the glove.

  • Finger and Joint Stability: In grappling, fighters often tape their fingers and other joints to provide support and prevent hyperextension or strains. This is particularly common in arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, where finger grips are essential.

Types of MMA Tapes

There are several types of tape used in MMA, each with its own specific characteristics:

  • Athletic Tape (Zinc Oxide Tape): This is a rigid, non-elastic tape made from cotton. It provides maximum support and is the go-to for securing the hands and wrists for striking. It's known for its strong adhesive and durability, staying in place through the most intense workouts.

  • Elastic Adhesive Bandage (EAB): This tape has some stretch to it, offering a balance between support and flexibility. It's often used to provide a more comfortable wrap or to secure other layers of tape and gauze without completely restricting movement.

  • Gauze: Gauze is used as a base layer for padding, particularly over the knuckles. It adds a soft cushion and helps to absorb sweat before the tape is applied, ensuring a secure and long-lasting wrap.
